WHY ARE NAIL TECHS SO UNDERPAID?

It’s no secret that there’s such a big debate around how much nail techs should be charging and why our prices are such a hot topic.
Many believe that nails should be ‘affordable’ and anything above £50 is considered unjustified. To simply put it, nail techs are the most underrated, underpaid beauty professionals in the industry.
It’s okay to demand more
We deserve better and it’s time we demand it. Overseas we see our fellow USA nail techs dominating their field of work because they understand and know their worth. Being lenient with our boundaries and being afraid to up your prices is all apart of the reason why people feel as if they can speak on our craft.
But that was then and this is now. So many nail techs have invested years into their craft to successfully run a business and it’s a disrespect to ourselves to even believe that how we are treated is justified.
Makeup only last one night, a fancy blowout will maybe last a week, but when nails are lasting over 3+ weeks we are still fighting for a spot at the ‘high price table ‘. Now this isn’t an attack on the hair and makeup gurus as I believe they charge their worth, but it’s about time nail techs do the same. We work too hard to be accepting lame excuses of how full sets use to be £25.
Stop Trying To Justify Your Prices
You do not need to explain to anyone why you are worth more than what you are asking for. Not in business, to a man, not to ANYONE.
You don’t need to explain why you believe your time and skills should see more of a profit, just do it. Understand this is an act of self love and allow yourself to receive the benefits of your creative work.
You prove it by providing high quality work and having prices that reflect that. Allow your skills to do the talking and watch how quiet everyone becomes.
Reality Check
If you don’t respect yourself… how can someone else? The only reason why non nail techs feel so comfortable speaking on a topic that they have no knowledge about is because we have allowed them. Yes their input is appreciated and we should always listen to the customers needs, but when it comes to your self worth, skills, time and effort that shouldn’t be up for debate. If you truly want to build a life for yourself from a career within the nail industry you have to take your business seriously. One factor that contributes to that is your pricing.
Why charging more is a great idea
Upping your prices can feel a bit like imposter syndrome. Thoughts like ‘Who do I think I am’ ‘‘Why do I even think I’m worth more than what I’m charging’ may slip into your mind and where as self awareness is sexy, limiting thoughts and beliefs are not. You ARE worth more and you are exactly who you think you are. A skilful babe with incredbile talents that need to be appreciated.
When you up your prices, it gives you the motivation to become a greater nail tech. You may have thoughts of adding new skills to your current one or adding a new service into your business. When you charge more, you can offer more and this can help with the feeling of I don’t deserve this ‘‘extra money’.
You will begin to attract new valuable customers who appreciate quality. Clients who make a purchase based on the experience they’re getting will outlive the clients who just want a quick fix for a cheap price. Cheap clients are fleeting and will leave you the moment a better deal comes up. But those who truly value you and your expertise will follow you anywhere you go. Just trust me and take my word for it.
